This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than ten years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Seven years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to 12. Close to 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
Our school was build in 1957 and remodeled thirty years ago. My classroom has two large windows; however, in the hot months, I have to keep the blinds down and windows closed to prevent from getting the classroom too hot. Similarly, in the wintertime, I need to keep blinds down to keep the warm air inside the classroom, which means, no natural light comes in from most of the school year. I purchased several small fans to keep the air circulating; however, it does not prevent my students from getting hot and sweaty.
I want to be able to provide my students with a comfortable environment where they can focus on their learning and not have to worry about constantly getting up for drinks to stay cool or to have to wear layers of clothes to stay warm.
The hot + cool fan I am requesting will be used all year long, it will allow having the blinds up to let the natural light in every day.
Natural light in the classrooms has been proven to have a profound positive impact on health, wellness, behavior and academic performance in students of all ages. This project will eliminate the need to keep our natural light out, kids getting up constantly to get drinks of water, and keeps kids from having to wear so many layers during the wintertime. My kindergarteners will be able to stay cool or warm all year long.
