My students need books, dolls, and puzzles that represent them and people in their community who may have different abilities and cultures.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The preschool children that attend our Early Childhood Center are between the ages of 2.9 years of age up to age 5. 95% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. There are 2 sessions of 15 students, 7 qualify for an IEP and 8 typically developing students. Out of the 30 students that I have, 85% are second language learners!
Many of my students struggle with social-emotional skills.
I would love to start my year off with a library to teach the principles of positive mindset, such as empathy and perseverance . I need diverse picture books to teach empathy and acceptance of all the students in their community and the world.
My Project
When children see a doll, puzzle, or book that mirrors them, they feel accepted and valued. I would like to add a variety of diverse books, dolls, and puzzles to our classroom.
I am focusing on social-emotional learning, teaching the students empathy toward others, acceptance of each others own unique qualities, and teaching how to have a positive relationship with others!
Children need to be exposed to people of different races, abilities, and cultures. I want my students to be helpful, caring and not fear differences in others. Through consistent exposure, children will realize that even though people are different they have some similarities also. But most important everyone deserves kindness, respect, and a friend!
