My Students

The children of immigrants, or immigrants themselves- my students value hard work and the opportunities they have, but face many social, emotional, and economic challenges. Over half of them are English Learners and 90 percent come from low income families. Many have come to the United States fleeing intolerance or other hardships at home, and are now learning to live in a very diverse community.

My students are developing into reflective learners who seek out opportunities for action.

At our school, we have a focus on communication through writing and presentation literacy. They are learning to tell their own stories. And with such a wide range of experiences to share and to learn from, they have a lot of stories to tell.

My class is caring, curious, and motivated. They love team-building activities and practicing their leadership skills. They enjoy math, and the Zumba breaks that come afterwards. They get lost in stories and beg for one more chapter. They love using technology to develop research skills, and to share what they've learned. They are great at making do with limited resources, but have so much potential to achieve more, given the opportunity.

My Project

It is a very confusing time for my students. Many students in my class have come to the United States from other countries. Many were fleeing conflicts or injustices that they now hear about in the news. They are hearing people all around them debate their right to be in this country. They are feeling lucky that they were not among those turned away or locked up, but they still do not feel entirely safe. Students who were born here are worried about their classmates and confused about the conflicting messages they receive from the media. My students are old enough to pay attention to current events, but not old enough to understand them completely.

I would like to share as many immigrant stories as possible with my students this year, so that they know that they are welcome, accepted, and not alone in our school community.

Sharing stories leads to understanding and acceptance. Through this project, my students will see themselves and their friends and families reflected in the books we read. They will understand immigration as a complicated issue, and be able to connect what they hear in the news with the stories we read in class. They will be able to connect the stories we read in class with their own lives and the lives of their classmates.

Each of the books requested tells a story that will help my students understand the various reasons why people migrate, and the opportunities and challenges that exist for them. The display shelves will allow for a section of our classroom to be dedicated to this important issue.
