Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students and their families are really special. We have a large school, with an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population, and we work hard to create opportunities for our community to get together to share their unique experiences and engage in and celebrate learning.

With a majority of the families in our school living in poverty, we try to create innovative learning experiences that build our students' repertoire.

We want to offer students at our Title I public school the same sorts of experience that students in rich public schools receive. We are focused on social justice and educational equity.

My Project

We have many conversations about beauty, race, identity and diversity in our classes. We discuss race as a construct (knowing that the consequences of race are real!), the historically shifting meaning of e "white", and the definition of beauty. Students explore their own identities and discuss diversity within our classroom and broader community.

People colors give students a hands-on way to discuss skin color and identity.

These materials give us a starting place for discussions about the beauty of diversity. We will use these crayons to make self-portraits, create a classroom mural, and to re-envision Renaissance Art. It is my sincere hope that through such learning experiences students will embrace their own identities as well as those of their classmates. Working together, I believe we can create a world without racism. Thank you for considering making a donation to this project!
