Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The children at my school are special to me because despite the many challenges they are faced with both in and out of the classroom, they don't. allow their circumstances to determine their outcome.

My students come from low income families where there are some cases of high poverty, and single family homes.

They often do not have the supplies necessary to help facilitate learning throughout the school year.

They are truly eager and excited to learn and discover new things. Many of them have become active in our soccer team, and after school tutoring program. They are also beginning to think about college as something for them to work towards. It is my desire to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences that can translate into their lives and inspire dreams of success and achievement. My main goal is to have every child in my class be able to read and comprehend every book that they can put their hands on. I want to equip them with this life skill of reading that can help raise them from their negative circumstances to a fulfilling outcome.

My Project

Our students struggle with being able to read at grade level. 1st grade is where many of our children are beginning to learn how to read. In order to facilitate this, we need proper resources to help teach students decoding strategies.

Children need to read appropriate leveled books at their instructional level to help them progress to the desired reading level of I or J at the end of 1st grade.

Having a cart to house the books helps to foster organization in our classroom, while providing a place for them in my limited classroom space.

Students would be able to use the timers in my class to record how many words in a minute they are able to read. This also helps with fluency and comprehension. Also, having comfortable seats for my 1st graders to sit in our classroom library and read independently can help improve overall reading comprehension and a love of many other genres of books.
