Wayfinding Through Art

My Project

Since they do not have a school art class, it's so important to be able to integrate art into the classroom.

As part of our 4th grade Hawaiian Studies curriculum, we are integrating hands-on art projects to deepen students' understanding of Hawaiian history and culture.

Using black plates, stars, and sharpies, students will create constellation maps labeled with Hawaiian star names to explore how ancient wayfinders navigated to Hawaii. Twine and adhesive hooks will allow us to display these constellations in the classroom for ongoing reference. Students will also research native Hawaiian species and craft sun catchers using cardstock, contact paper, and tissue paper to showcase the animals they study. With oil pastels, they will design Pauluan-style storyboards comparing their own life journeys to those of early Hawaiian voyagers. Rope will be used to teach students traditional wayfinding knots still practiced today. Lastly, students will grow and harvest ‘olena (turmeric) in our school garden and use it to naturally tie-dye shirts, combining science, art, and cultural practice. These supplies will bring Hawaiian history to life through meaningful, creative expression.

My students are curious, resilient, and full of aloha. They come from diverse cultural backgrounds and bring their own unique perspectives to the classroom every day. With these projects I hope to allow students to connect more deeply with Hawaiian history and culture through hands-on, meaningful art projects. In addition to this, I also want to increase motivation and excitement for social studies and science by integrating them with creative, tactile activities.
