Wayfinding: Learning Voyaging and Navigation via Sail Cars

My Students

My students grew up in the heart of Waimanalo, located on the Windward side of Oahu, in the state of Hawaii. This place is a very close knit community. My students come from struggling families, and they just need a lot of love! We work every day to be college ready, and prepare ourselves for the real world.

Our school is located in a predominately rural, low-income neighborhood, with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Islander ancestry.

My Project

I am developing a new STEM program at my school for the new STEM building. To connect with the community, I will be developing the STEM lessons based off Hawaiian culture. These classes will focus on Hawaiian wayfinding, voyaging, and canoe design.

How did the ancient Hawaiian sail their wa'a (canoes) on the vast ocean?

The Sail Car Kits will be a great STEM activity for the students to navigate through the engineering design process by designing and constructing a sail for their car. They will experiment with the shape of the sail as well as its angle and pitch to create the most optimized design. This will guide the students on the principles of sailing and navigating.

Harness the power of wind and learn about the importance in sail shape through hands-on experimentation and culture.
