We have added "Badger Time" at our school this year as 30 minutes each day of extensions and interventions. Teachers teach 4-week sessions of either an extension or a math/ELA intervention. Our staff has creatively been able to offer extensions such as beginning Spanish, debate, STEM, 3D printing, digital animation, forensic science, mock trial, and more! Unfortunately, there isn't any additional funding for extra supplies so teachers have to be creative to bring these materials into the classroom.
Through exploration of themselves and other characters through literature, students will come to understand that our need to belong can influence our behaviors.
For Badger Time, I am currently doing a book club with 17 boys, and they are LOVING IT! I'm hoping to do another one, but this time I'd like to pair it with a movie. Alabama Moon is a great choice, especially for boys who are reluctant readers.
Our middle school is home to approximately 350 bright and talented students. We are a rural school in northern Idaho, and we are isolated from opportunities, so it is my job to bring opportunities to them.
My Project
In grades 6-8, we intentionally expose students to a wide variety of genres. The staff has worked hard to create an independent reading program that prepares them for high school and beyond. When students come with excitement about the book they are reading, that is a wonderful gift!
Watt Key is an American author who will quickly become a fan favorite for our middle school students.
His books target reluctant readers, and they are high-interest especially for middle-school aged boys. After doing a book club with Alabama Moon, I know our boys will devour his other novels.
There is nothing like the excitement on a student's face when they find a book they absolutely love! These books will be available for students to select as part of our 40-book challenge. Our goal is to encourage a love of reading in our students, so we're always trying to be creative so support them on this reading journey!
