This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are bright, inquisitive, and love a challenge. I teach enrichment groups for gifted students throughout my day. Gifted students come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I teach some gifted students with reading disabilities as well as bilingual students still catching up on English skills.
Letting students decorate their work with basic supplies like water colors and Sharpies can be a powerful motivator for them to accomplish writing and other tasks and turn the mundane into meaningful creativity.
We use Sharpies on a weekly basis for all kinds of projects, and watercolors regularly. This past year, my students have used watercolors to decorate their poetry, create art inspired by artists we've studied, and to make handmade thank-you cards. We recently took these supplies with us to a national robotics competition, where we invited participants from all over the world to make Thank-You cards for their coaches and help teach our own students the importance of showing gratitude and inviting others to do the same.
The activity was so popular that our watercolors and Sharpies are in need of a refresh to be ready for the coming year for classroom learning and robotics.
In our rural district, most of the families work in agriculture. Over 80% of our school children are of Hispanic descent, and many of them are English Language Learners. Most students participate in the free lunch program.
