This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the honor of being a fourth grade ELA teacher in the District of Columbia public schools. Our students are kind, hard-working, humorous, and energetic. Many of our students come to school being survivors of trauma. Their resiliency is awe-inspiring. About half of our student population are English language learners and 99% of our student population receives free or reduced-price lunch.

Our students are creative and clever scholars who have all the potential in the world and a whole school of adults supporting them in their efforts to succeed.

Our students have lived through some unfortunate and unimaginable hardships. But, it is our responsibility as educators to provide them a world-class education from the moment they step in the door. We strive to instill independence, self-efficacy, self-esteem and strategic thinking in every student.

My Project

These materials will help my students reflect on essential inquiry lines that they explore with throughout their learning experiences in a week. Students will have an opportunity to make, be creative and express their own identity through art and all while making their thinking visible.

They will get to consolidate big ideas, grapple with lingering questions, and explore complexities of the subject matter in which they are learning about each week.

This rich and rigorous learning experience will deepen student learning, actively engage students and also act as a form of formative assessment in my effort to truly understanding my students’ learning and analyze their thinking.
