My students need a Carolina Exploring the Quality of Natural Waters Kit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Within our immediate area, there are so many opportunities to be involved with local water quality. I intend to use this material to test a local riparian stream, combined with visits to a water treatment plant, a sewage treatment plant, and a trip to the beach for a clean-up activity.
Most of the students at my school are from the immediate urban, highly-minority and underprivileged community.
Some, however, came to the school because it is an Arts and Science academy. Hands-on activities in the field like the one that I am proposing cater to both student populations.
My Project
My project will give my students a much better appreciation of water quality. We have already studied the chemical properties of water that make it the unique substance that cradles living. We will have guest speakers taking about water quality worldwide and PUR packets. Also, I propose to take a trip to the local reservoir and water treatment plant, which was state-of-the-art when it was first built, a major sewage treatment plant, and a local riparian stream. Here, we will test the quality of the water in this waterway with the chemicals that you are supplying if you fund this grant. We will become part of the solution by participating a beach/waterway clean-up project.
This project will give the students a first-hand look at the importance of clean drinking water and the water quality of our local watershed.
They will leave as informed citizens with a better appreciation of a topic that has worldwide ramifications.
