Help me give my students clean water! Our school like many in NYC has high levels of lead in the water that exacerbate learning disabilities. Students are scared to drink it! This affects their health and schooling.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The world in a classroom! My ESL students come from all parts of the world and have amazing stories to tell. My Special Education students come from all over NYC! They are young people of hope and intellect. They learn English while studying to pass their exams in the various subject areas. Some work full-time in the evenings and weekends to support themselves or families as they go to school.
Our students are known for their linguistic abilities and awards in the sciences.
Coming from various cultures, my students discuss world problems on the micro level, developing knowledge and empathy. Many go on to college in our city and state.
My Project
Water is life! This Berkey water filter will save our special education students from spending their money on water bottles that fill up our landfills. It will support their health by removing water anxiety and improving their hydration.
Low-income students in the city already suffer from many home and health stressors, and no access to water during the day greatly affects their progress.
The tap water in our school is mostly not potable. Students won't drink it without a filtration system. We have already bought them reusable water bottles. Please help us give them something to put in them!
