This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Language Arts teacher at a middle school in New York City. The population of my school and class is very diverse. Over 90% of my school's population receives free lunch, which is a strong indicator that the overwhelming majority of students come from lower-level income households. This is not usually an obstacle for my strong and determined students, but when it comes to reading, usually the books I have in my room are the only ones they have access to.

I have 96 incredible students who love to read who are looking for their favorite books, by their favorite authors, that they actually voted on!

Unfortunately, my school and classroom, in particular, are coming up short in terms of providing them with all of their favorite novels, by both new and well-established authors. More specifically, my classroom needs an influx of new books, books that my kids actually voted on, that they want to read right now to satisfy their desire to grow and strive as readers this year.

My Project

These books will make an incredible difference right away. Since my students have already researched and voted for these books, their favorites, I can quickly transition these titles into my library and the check-out process will begin immediately.

The fulfillment of this book proposal will impact my students the day I open up the boxes they were delivered in.

My classroom library is lacking, to say the least, and with this year's crop of students being such avid readers, it's hard to keep up with their thirst for new book titles.

It's very rare that students have such current titles, as this project would provide, in their classroom libraries. The classics will remain, but these fresh titles are just what students are craving.
