Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students attend an elementary school in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. We are part of a diverse community filled with hard-working families, supporting their children's academic needs as best they can. Many of our families struggle financially, as over half of our students receive free or reduced lunch. As a school, we focus on always doing what's best for kids! We have received many acknowledgments for the success we have achieved, in meeting the needs of our students, even though we have limited resources, as compared to many schools and districts around us.
My first graders have so much to learn during the year, but they often forget how far they come, from the beginning of the year to the end.
I take time to help them recognize their accomplishments, big and small, throughout the year, so they learn to be proud of all that they can do and all that they learn as they go! This includes helping my students to focus on their own learning goals and individual successes, because they each need to be supported and challenged in their own way.
My Project
My students work hard to be successful in the classroom every day, but First Graders do struggle to focus for the duration of a full lesson, in any subject. I plan for movement breaks within our school day, to make it possible for students to have opportunities to move in between and even during lessons. However, lessons that require being seated do cause students to get a bit squirmy after even a short time. This is true for all students in my class, but it becomes especially difficult for students who struggle with attention and focusing needs.
First graders naturally like to move, and I am excited to provide seating that helps students focus, while allowing them to wiggle while they work.
Kids Kore Wobble Chairs are the perfect way to offer my students the chance to wiggle while they work! I was recently able to order one of these chairs for my classroom, with the gift of some unexpected classroom funds. After seeing how excited my students are to have the opportunity to take a turn wiggling while working, I am eager to acquire enough chairs so that all students at my small group table can wiggle while they work. I currently need 7 more Wobble Chairs to complete this goal.
Some of the most important learning tasks that we accomplish every day are done at the small group table. Here, I conduct Guided Reading Groups and Differentiated Math Groups, and I plan to add a Guided Writing Group, as well. It is in these groups that I am able to offer the different levels of support and assistance that all of my students need. Giving my students a chance to wiggle while they work will improve their overall ability to focus, therefore, improving their ability to learn.
