My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Some of them don’t even get to leave our small community. I am very passionate about keeping them engaged by doing hands on activities. They love doing labs indoors, but I really see their love for science when we get the chance to get our hands dirty and learn outdoors. We have three raised garden beds and need more materials to be able to utilize them. We were able to plant pumpkins this year and it was such a joy to watch the students care for them. My students want to learn new skills and are thirsting for knowledge. I want to give them opportunities to learn about subjects that they might not learn otherwise. Even though we live in a rural community the kids have limited exposure to gardening and outdoor experiences.
My Project
This project will allow my students to utilize our outdoor garden. They will be able to observe the plants growing in our raised garden beds, the herb tower, a root view garden inside, and also collect bugs.
This project will allow all of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to explore and learn outdoors.
My students will be able to care for our plants by using tools to plant them, weed them, and water them. Our students will get to explore our outdoor garden and observe the life cycles of different plants and bugs. With our herb tower students will be able to really smell and taste different plants. The indoor root view garden will give students an inside view of what it looks like under the soil.
With the bug collection materials students will catch, observe, and release all different types of bugs. Students will be playing while learning with all of these materials. My goal is to give them an experience that they have never had in the classroom.
