The students that I teach are between 10th and 12th grade. The students in my class have a clinical diagnosis of severe emotional disturbance. They are in a single classroom all day because they have a hard time interacting with other peers and adults. I am entering my 6th year as an ED teacher, and they are the most inspirational students I know. They all have hardships at home. Their lives are filled with poverty, drugs, gangs, and myself, who thinks the world of them. I will have these students for the next one to three years, so they will benefit from these supplies for a long time. Our school is a career tech high school, and all of our students are being educated to be career and college ready.
Typically my students are referred to as the "Bad Student" and that is the farthest from the truth.
They just need someone on their side. In our class, we have created that space for our students. Now that they feel comfortable with us, we want to give them the same opportunity as their peers. We believe in them.
My Project
The IXL classroom license will help make a big difference in my students’ learning by providing them with access to a website that has a wide variety of mathematical skills for them to practice. They can use this website both at home and at school I will help support their distance learning. I will also be able to teach and have students work on IXL to practice specific assigned skills. In addition to being able to monitor my students working and help where needed, IXL will also provide immediate feedback to my students, whether that’s positive reinforcement or an example/explanation for how to answer a missed question correctly. My students will be able to learn that they can always achieve mastery in math, because IXL provides them with an infinite amount of tries. Further, my students will gain confidence in math and the satisfaction of mastering skills.
IXL will help assist me in teaching my students new skills, but it will also help me reteach and differentiate any missing prior knowledge.
