This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fifth grade at a low-performing, Title 1 school in the South Bronx section of New York City (P.S. 43x). The school is a School in Need of Improvement Year 2 (SINI 2). Ninety-three percent of our students are entitled to free lunch.
Last school year, for the first time in eight years, our school did not print a 2006 Yearbook. Students, families, and teachers were very disappointed. Neither the school nor Parent Teacher Association had funds to cover the cost of printing. This was very heartbreaking for all.
I decided to write this proposal on behalf of the Graduating Class of 2007. If I have a digital camera and photoprinter, I can create yearbooks. The yearbook will include photos of different activities our fifth students participate in throughout their senior year. Our students take ballroom dancing lessons taught by one of Mr. Pierre's (subject of the movie "Mad Hot Ballroom Dancing") dance teachers. They attend clubs two days per week. Also, a group of students participates in the Project Boost Program. This program exposes underprivileged students to the cultural arts. Students go on trips to: Broadway shows; Off-Broadway shows and musicals; tours around New York City i.e. Little Italy, Harlem, and Chinatown; ice skating; and museums. Through Project Boost, we hope to start a robotics team this year. How great would it be to document all of their activities using a digital camera and including the photos in their yearbook?!
My teaching tools and resources are limited. I cannot afford to purchase a digital camera, photoprinter, and 150 yearbooks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
