This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic 4 year olds who love to learn! Our class is made up of 8 boys and 10 girls. Our small school is a kind and caring learning environment, nestled in a neighborhood just outside of downtown Los Angeles. Approximately 75% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our population is diverse with students coming from many ethnic backgrounds. We have received the honors of Title I High Achieving School and California Distinguished School.

My Project

My ETK (Expanded Transitional Kindergarten) students planted a vegetable garden this fall. We currently have pumpkins , radishes, snap peas, and lettuce growing in our garden bed outside of our classroom. My 4 year old students are learning responsibility and gaining understanding about where our food comes from.

We live in a climate in which we can garden year-round, so we need supplies like the soil, watering cans, and gardening tools to help us keep our garden growing.

We look forward to our winter and spring crops. Our school is in a community with few gardens, and our school playground is all blacktop. Our year-long gardening project is introducing these 4 year olds to the amazing experience of gardening.
