Washington Irving to George Rodrigue: Connections to Art & Science

My Students

"We can't wait to be back!" was a quote I heard more than once this summer. As an art teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many are being raised by grandparents.

Despite the many challenges they face, my students are creative and enthusiastic to learn.

These circumstances that are beyond their control limit them from experiencing life experiences many of us see as "typical". In my classroom, they are able to experience where art might take them. Drawing, painting and creating in 3 dimensions as well as learning about artists, many of which had circumstances that they can relate to, all contribute to an art program that encourages thinking and problem solving, explores diversity and excites the students.

My Project

Lab-Aids Dendrochronology - Tree-ring Dating Kit 52, Visions of the Tallgrass: Prairie Photographs and the other books & science kits will connect art and science through the study of Washington Irving and George Rodrigue.

Anytime you can connect art with another subject such as science, students takeaway, is that much more meaningful and long lasting.

Living where we do, we have a Tall Grass Prairie. The exact one Washington Irving traveled through. In addition, next November, our local museum will be hosting an exhibit of George Rodrigue's paintings. He is known for creating his paintings of Cajun life in order to keep the history and culture alive. One of the hallmarks of most of his early works is the moss draped live oak tree.

These materials will allow my classes to delve into scientific exploration of trees and tall grass prairies. The lessons learned will then be applied to their art studies. Followup with a local guest speaker on Washington Irving, a field trip to the Tall Grass Prairie and a visit from George Rodrigue's family will make this unit one of the more memorable the students will ever experience. Although we will not have the exhibit every year, I will video tape the guest speakers; all the other elements will be able to be replicated and I will be repeating this unit again.
