My Students

Kids love to read! Even the most reluctant reader will pick up a graphic novel, Manga, or comic book and plow through its pages. We have almost no graphic novels based on school content in our classroom library. Help to correct this!

All of my students come to my class speaking a language other than English.

Our classroom library has only a few books in Spanish and no bilingual books or books in Arabic, Korean, or any of the other languages my students speak. I teach math, science, and history for new and beginning English Language Learning students in a high-need community. Students speak a variety of languages including Spanish, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, and Tagalog. 80% of students receive free or reduced lunches. Additionally, their educational experiences have been diverse. A few students attended privates schools in their home countries, and others students have been out of school for a few years before entering the US public school system. My students need hands-on materials, visualizations, and extraordinary experiences to fuel their curiosity. Computer competency is necessary for my students to be able to be prepared for college.

My Project

I am requesting several graphic novels which cover a variety of fields. I have many biographies, such as Florance Nightingale and Madame Currie. I have also request books that deal with history and science. These books are high interest reads, I have one from this series in my class no and it is always being read. The pictures help students decode unfamiliar words. Since I teach ESL it is important to give my students every opportunity to access the English language.

Many scientists report being uninterested in school until they started read comics.

Then they began paying attention in science class to learn more about what was happening in their comics. Through your gift you could inspire the new generation of scientists, historians, and writers!
