This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 17 amazing students in a Title I school. Most of our students come from hard working families who try their best to provide their children with the tools they need. However, many times we have to help them at school with the learning tools as well. Our students have limited experiences beyond their neighborhoods. They don't always have access to visiting the library or technology resources at home. At school they know they have a safe, caring environment where they can learn and get the help they need.
My Project
I am requesting 2 sets of the 2017-2018 Sunshine State Books for my third grade scholars. Each year, the Florida Association for Media Education compiles a list of books to be the Sunshine State List. These 15 books are read by third, fourth and fifth graders across the state. Students are excited to read these books and complete comprehension activities as well as build reading stamina. In addition to reading these wonderful books, students get the opportunity to vote for their favorite book. The local county Supervisors of Elections send actual ballot machines and employees to schools. Our students complete a ballot choosing their favorite Sunshine State book and place their ballot in the machine to be counted. At the end of the school year, we get the results of the top voted book by all 3-5 grade students throughout the state. Not only does this list of books get students excited about reading, it teaches them about the Democratic voting process
"There is no such thing as a kid who hates reading, there are kids who love reading and kids who are reading the wrong books" James Patterson.
I am excited about providing the opportunity for my third grade scholars to have their first experience with Sunshine State books by having them readily available right in our classroom.
They will learn about their rights and responsibilities as voting citizens. They will see the voting process all the way through. They will also be able to build reading stamina which will help them become people who love to read. They will explore worlds outside of their own through the eyes of the book characters. They will increase their reading ability and speed.
