I teach at a STEM school on the south side of Chicago. Our primary focus is to prepare our students for the future using technology, math, and science to guide our instruction. Our students participate in engaging problem-solving projects, use math throughout the day, and imagine themselves in careers that will change the world!
Although our school is in a low-income area, our children are NOT poor!
They have a lot to offer the world and need the opportunity and experiences that students in more affluent communities are afforded.
Every morning, I write a literacy activity on the board for my first graders to complete after they finish eating their breakfast. Some of the students spend way more time than they should trying to copy the assignment than they do focused on the task. We work on literacy skills such as proper capitalization, punctuation and sight word recognition and some of my kids are unable to finish writing. I am asking for literacy journals with pre-written activities so that my little turtles have enough time to finish skills they know how to do but just can't write down quickly enough.
The end of the day can be very stressful for my babies.
They have spent 7 hours at school and need time to decompress before they go home. I have been giving them 15 minutes at the end of the day to listen to soothing music and write or draw in their journals, but we're quickly running out of paper! I've also gotten some complaints that they can't hear the music coming from my iPhone because the speaker isn't loud enough for everyone in the room to hear so I'm asking for a bluetooth speaker so that everyone can hear Beethoven, Count Basie or Beyonce - whatever the kids decide is the artist of the day.
The beginning and end of the day are an important part of every classroom and these tools will allow my children to start and finish their day. They love to draw and write; they just need a space to do it.
