Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The scholars that faithfully attend our school are an opinionated, curious, and very cool bunch. They are wacky and excited about their learning and rarely allow their "coolness" to prevent them from expressing it. For instance, my basketball players who boast about "breaking ankles" are also the ones who get excited when they finally break down a math concept or complete a project.
Although you wouldn't know it from the outside, my kids have also demonstrated much resilience.
Our school is a Title I school where 92% of our students come from low-income backgrounds. Many are from families who have immigrated to our country. They are a strong bunch!
My Project
I ordered 5 orders of different sizes of warm, black sweatpants and some healthy snacks for students to take home as they need. These pants are just your basic necessities for cold weather. I picked a few in different sizes as loaners, essentially, for our students. For those who need to keep them, they can just keep them, and in the future, as we see fit, we can buy more. I feel that this number of pants will be enough to meet the needs of our students with greatest needs.
I was hesitant to ask for too many pairs of pants and too many snacks because I didn't want the grant to not be met.
I notice that year to year, different support comes from different venues. I think, for now, this is enough.
Lastly, I added toothbrushes and toothpaste for students who chronically need a little extra assistance in keeping up their dental hygiene.
