Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend an inner city Title 1 school. Our school has a substantial amount of low income and ESL students. Most of my students face daily struggles with more responsibility than a 11 or 12 year-old should need to experience. Most take care of their younger siblings and have nobody to help them. However, my students come every morning with smiles on their faces and ready to start the day. They enjoy school and are excited to learn new things.
I've had to help them by getting the basic hygiene supplies such as toothpaste and soap.
Now I'm asking for some more help. I would like to provide each student with a hoodie for this upcoming winter. Many of them come to school cold, sometimes wearing shorts and flipflops, because that's all they have. I try to show and express how important school is so they come to school walking in the deep, cold snow, because they value their education.
For most of my students, being at school is the only time they can really be a kid. Because of this, I want them warm and happy when they arrive.
My Project
My students come from the highest poverty level. Many do not have the basic supplies for day to day living, much less extra things. Many do not have the clothing needed for the cold Utah winter months. Most come to school through the snow wearing shorts and t-shirts, sometimes flipflops, because that's all they have. I already have soap, toothpaste, and other hygiene supplies for them. Now I'm ask for help with hoodies. Giving them a hoodie will help keep them warm while walking to school this winter. Education is important to them and I want them to know they are important to me.
