This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is a beautiful, diverse school for immigrant students from all around the world. Our students are aged 17-22, often arriving to the United States just days or weeks before enrolling in classes. They speak many languages and come from many different backgrounds. I am inspired every day by their commitment to education, especially studying in a language they are only just learning.

Across many cultures, a warm drink can bring people together.

Minnesota winters can be a hard time for everyone, especially those who have never experienced the cold. To make school a more welcoming and comfortable space, especially in our windowless classroom, I plan to create a warm drink station. This will specifically be set up before school (to encourage on-time arrival) and during after-school activities (such as conferences or homework sessions). I will use the cart to move glasses back and forth from the staff room for washing. The tea and coffee selections will be displayed for students to choose. The goal is for students to feel safe and more at-home so they can focus on the learning. After all, they have to think twice as hard to learn science since they are doing it in two languages all the time! Thanks for your consideration and helping to spread a little warmth to our new students and neighbors all throughout the year.
