Warm Books + Warm Lighting: A Recipe for Relaxation!

Help me give my students ambient classroom lighting and more diverse classroom library books to encourage reading at all times, not just in the classroom space.

My Project

As is in many classroom spaces, we are expected to use overhead fluorescent lighting to teach and inspire our students in. Believe it or not, this lighting can increase the amount of stress students feel within a classroom space, making them feel more hesitant to enter, let alone learn and collaborate with their peers. Even as an adult, I know I work better when the lighting is not quite so harsh on my eyes.

With the appropriate lighting and a new rug, students will be encouraged to feel a sense of calm and safety that will help solidify literacy skills for years to come.

In addition to appropriate lighting, I am hoping to expand my classroom library to include more diverse texts that will increase reading engagement amongst my students. If I can get my students to feel safe in my classroom, I know I will be more likely to convince them to get a book in their hands, helping them access countless stories from the world around them. These materials will help me do just that!
