My students need the following art supplies such as 3-D collage kit, craft paper, tape and the books on healthy habits to better communicate and show their knowledge and understanding of wants and needs.
I am a Pre-K teacher in a low income/high poverty school. These students also come from various ethnicities that bring great challenges along with poverty. My students come to school to have opportunities they wouldn't have had if they didn't attend school. By attending this Pre-K program, it is my hope to provide educational experiences that will level the playing field to that of their peers as they enter Kindergarten.
Even though our students face many challenges, they are eager to learn when they come to school.
My students are always looking to creating things to express what they have learned. They yearn for knowledge daily and look to me for guidance in their learning.
My Project
Since the children in my classroom are 3-5 years old, the concept of wants and needs can be difficult to understand. It is my responsibility to relate wants and needs to a topic that is easier to understand, such as the topic of food.
One of our Pre-K units has an emphasis on eating healthy.
This is a great time to incorporate the topic of wants and needs. My students haven’t mastered writing but enjoy expressing themselves through art. With the art supplies I have requested students will be able to make 3-D art, collages, pictures and sculptures along with graphs and T-charts. This will be a way that I will be able to assess their knowledge of wants and needs with a healthy approach.
