My Students

As the class is learning new words throughout the school year, it is very important for them to be able to look up new and exciting words in a dictionary. Kids are curious and they need to learn independence and need to learn how to look up new words.

My students are eager, excited, and love to learn.

A lot of them do not have books at home. They do not have a computer at home. A lot of them do not have parents at home, as they work two and three jobs trying to make ends meet. My second graders have innocent curious minds and are always asking what does this mean? What does that mean? How wonderful would it be for them to be able to grab a dictionary from my book shelf and look up the information themselves to find the answer? This is what makes kids eager to learn, and independent and successful learners.

My Project

My students will be able to do more independent learning. They will be able to go when they want and look up a new word. They will learn how to use a dictionary. That in itself will help my students become successful learners. I will be able to teach my students together as a class if each one of them were able to have a dictionary in their hand.

By getting a class set of dictionaries, my students will be able to look up new and exciting words on their own or with a friend.

Right now I have to look up the word on the computer and let them see it to figure out what it means. Not all children have a compute, and we cannot teach our students to depend on a machine. They need to learn the correct way to look up a word in the dictionary.
