Do you remember the weekly current events magazines we used to read in elementary school? They were always packed with lots of interesting articles and beautifully colored illustrations. I want my second graders to be able to do this too. I want them to read and enjoy Time for Kids every week!
I teach in a very large elementary school in Wisconsin.
We have five classes at every grade level in our K-5 building. School budgets are stretched to the max all over the state. Teachers are asked not to exceed their budget, and they should expect that cuts will have to be made next year. That is why I am turning to DonorsChoose for help with this project.
My second graders are enthusiastic learners. They love to read fiction and nonfiction. Time for Kids would be the perfect news magazine for them!
My Project
Second grade is such a critical grade in a child's reading development. Teachers are trying to get the students to bridge from "learning to read" over to "reading to learn". High interest nonfiction magazines will motivate my students to read. Time for Kids has the latest news articles in the areas of health, science, politics, business, society and entertainment. It would be the perfect nonfiction supplement to our current reading materials.
