My Students
My students live in a Utah town in a low-income neighborhood. Hardworking parents often don't have time or don't know how to fully support learning at home. Frequently, the effects of poverty manifest in a child's inability to focus and tune out distractions which are skills needed for learning.
My students love learning and are committed to building a better future through hard work and practice!
Title I schools face the challenges of poverty that other schools do not. Research is documenting the impact that poverty has on education. Nearly 60% of students in our school receive free or reduced-price meals. A third are native Spanish speakers. My students need a school that understands their special challenges and intervenes to help.
We are preparing today's students for the jobs of tomorrow. Essentially, we are teaching students the ways to think critically and not just training them on vocational skills. I do not even know what jobs we will need in thirty years, but I do know that they need to read, do the math, think analytically, and problem solve.
My Project
Students and teachers are pleased when we are more productive in class. Some people need to move a little to focus better, and most people can benefit from standing more frequently between seated tasks. Everybody likes flexibility in school.
Productivity results when students are free to focus on their learning rather than fussing over physical comfort.
The standing desks in my class are wonderful tools for helping students move while thinking. A class set is prohibitively expensive so, as yet, we only have three. When students can choose between sitting or standing to complete their work, they feel more motivated.
Pairing a standing desk with a stool will result in more frequent use. I've got the desks, I just needs some stools!
More than half of students from low‑income households
