Wanted: Read Alouds to Target Character Education and Diverse Backgrounds!
Help me give my students updated classroom read-alouds that incorporate characters from diverse backgrounds and situations, as well as books that target mindfulness and character education!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a school where many of my students come from families that are economically disadvantaged. Our school is considered high-poverty and approximately seventy percent of our students receive free lunch.
I teach students who come from so many different backgrounds, but who all have one thing in common: a desire to learn and play!
The students that come to me every day are silly, smart and curious about the world around them! They take pride in everything they do and there is nothing quite like experiencing the world through their eyes.
My Project
My classroom is full of students from quite diverse backgrounds. Together, we represent a total of 9 different countries of origin and 4 different home languages! While choosing read-alouds this year for my students, I noticed that there is a lack of characters who LOOK like my students, and who have had similar experiences.
I want to give my students experiences with stories that incorporate people that look like them, and scenarios they have experienced in their own lives coming from other countries.
That desire is where this project was born! With your help, I am hoping to add books to my classroom library that incorporate diverse backgrounds and situations that my students can relate to. In addition, I would like to incorporate literature that teaches character education as a very mindful, pointed subject.
With the addition of these read-alouds, I am hoping to be able to begin conversations in my classroom that ALL students can participate in! I would love to have more conversations about the students' home countries, what their families are like, and how they are feeling as people. I would love to be able to build character and acceptance through conversation, and all teachers know this begins with literature!
