My Students

My students are at a variety of levels presently. Most fall between the 1st and 6th grade assessment level in both language and math. This is challenging with 30 students! My goal is to help them achieve the highest level that they are able and make sure the curriculum is both focused and stimulating.

My students come from eclectic backgrounds.

They represent several countries, several ethnic origins, several socio-economic levels, and many live in poverty. We are a generally considered a low income school in our district. We serve our students breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack. Our volunteers provide on-going foodbank services, dental services, and clothing for those whose families are unable to afford these basic items for a comfortable life. Most all of my students want to learn, seeking out information that will make them as smart or smarter than others their age. They are eager to use technology, microscopes, maps, and manipulatives. They find it challenging to do any kind of homework because of time constraints on their home life, so we do a lot of our homework in class. I see confidence increase daily as these students put a great deal of effort into their studies. Most of them know that they can achieve success with a lot of hard work and persistence.

My Project

With the purchase of Scholastic Readers, my students will be able to participate not only in classroom discussions and reading, but they will be able to communicate with other classrooms and have the same information at their fingertips as others do. With the math supplies that I am requesting, the students will be able to visualize their math through the write on and wipe off boards. This will keep them focused and participate more fully during math time. The abacus has really been an exciting way to solve equations for us this past year. Presently we have one abacus, with a few more, I believe the students will learn twice as quickly. The opportunity to have health displays will bring the human body curriculum to a whole new level of hands-on learning. My students this year are learning about space, in the past this curriculum has been set aside for 3rd grade classes. I am very excited about it now being taught in 5th grade. This book set will be a great addition to class.

I believe that any additional resources that potentially will pique even one child's imagination is valuable to my classroom.

I still remember the life size displays that we had in our classroom as a child. I remember taking apart the systems and putting them together and playing with the skeleton that we had in our classroom. I always try to have a multitude of hands on learning in my class and I know my students will greatly benefit from the requested items. Thank you
