My students come from eclectic backgrounds. They represent several countries, several ethnic origins, several socio-economic levels, and many live in poverty. We are a generally considered a low income school in our district. We serve our students breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack. Our volunteers provide on-going foodbank services, dental services, and clothing for those whose families are unable to afford these basic items for a comfortable life. Most all of my students want to learn, seeking out information that will make them as smart or smarter than others their age. They are eager to use technology, microscopes, maps, and manipulatives. They find it challenging to do any kind of homework because of time constraints on their home life, so we do a lot of our homework in class. I see confidence increase daily as these students put a great deal of effort into their studies. Most of them know that they can achieve success with a lot of hard work and persistence.
