This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our campus serves students from 3 years old up to 5th grade. Over 85% of our students are from low-income households. In addition to our robust Dual Language: One Way program, about 50% of our population are English Language Learners and emergent bilinguals.

Unfortunately, library books were forgotten when students were abruptly sent home due to the pandemic and became lost in the shuffle of virtual and in-person learning.

As a result, many book series popular with our readers only have a couple volumes remaining. Between the missing titles and long wait times, students have less access to their favorite titles. I want to offer our students the books they love again and ask for your support to accomplish that goal. Our neighborhood school is supported by our tight-knit community. We want to respond to their belief in us by preparing our students for their future and encouraging reading whenever we can!

My Project

These materials will encourage our students to continue reading in and out of school. The library is a place for students to browse and borrow a variety of books. With so many titles that never made their way back to school after the pandemic, student choice is down, especially for our reluctant readers who stick to their favorite authors/series/characters. Though we were able to retrieve a number of books from our students who returned from remote learning this fall, we are having to accept the loss of a couple thousand dollars worth of books.

It's heartbreaking when your reluctant readers ask for books that you used to have and you don't have the funds to replace them.

By funding our project, you are helping get those beloved titles back on the Palm Library shelves and into the hands of students who miss them dearly.
