This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students discover the magic of books! "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go," wrote Dr. Seuss.

My students are kindergarten and first grade students with special needs.

Their mild to moderate disabilities range from mental retardation to Autism, to a learning disability, to emotional disturbance, and to developmental delay. They require all learning modalities (visuals, kinesthetic, auditory, and tactile), patience, repetition of new concepts, exposure to new things, and lots of love! Most of my students are delayed in some or all of the following areas: social emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development. Fostering a love for reading is an important part of kindergarten teaching. Listening to stories read aloud to students makes the story accessible to every level of reader and encourages well-written, fluent writing.

My Project

My kindergarten and first grade students need to listen to what good reading sounds like when working independently in centers for additional modeling. Students are learning to read, improving listening skills, and following directions (open book, and follow words from left to right and from top to progression). For this reason we are asking for a listening center and listening center material. A story being read aloud is more than just reciting the words on the page. By donating a listening center and listening center books on CDs to our classroom, you are giving each student the opportunity to engage children in language development activities that help the child connect a personal experience with print and hear wonderful fluently read stories that they enjoy. It also builds up the child's ability to sit quiet and listen for longer lengths of time. Children begin to comprehend the meaning in the text just by the energetic and enthusiastic way the story is read to them.

My students have not yet discovered the magic of books on tape/CD, for we do not have a listening center.

Creating a listening center in the classroom is a useful way to help my students learn to read, improve listening skills and follow directions. It also helps children expand their vocabulary and helps promote independence. Please help our classroom get a listening center and material. This includes a CD/cassette player, 4 wireless classroom headphones, and 5 listening center book packages.
