Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant group of first graders that come from a wide range of backgrounds and family situations. Our school provides a common ground for each of my students, where they are able to come to school ready to learn knowing they are walking into a safe and fun learning environment.

We have been working together to make school a fun place where we all can grow emotionally, socially and academically.

First grade is an essential time for students to grow as readers, thus, more leveled books for our classroom is absolutely vital for their growth.

My Project

I am an avid book reader and have always been! This year, I have been inspired by a book called "The Book Whisperer," and I have challenged my students to a 40 book challenge, which I am also going to complete. We spend each afternoon having silent reading time for 30-45 minutes, and it has already been life-changing for my students. My students are actually upset when I tell them to come to a stopping point. Many students, who were previously reluctant readers, are now finding more enjoyment in reading as well. We spend time talking about book recommendations, and they are piling up books on the corner of their desks just waiting to start their next book. It is important for my students to have more choices when selecting books in our library since going to the library or purchasing books at a bookstore is not readily accessible to them. The books I am requesting not only are at an appropriate level but cover several interests, such as fantasy, nonfiction (animals), and tales and fables. I have also included several popular series, such as, "Little Critter", "Danny the Dinosaur", and the "Fox" series.

A quote I love from Donalyn Miller, "Readers without the power to make their own choices are unmotivated."

We need books to add to our classroom library that not only meet their reading interests but are also at appropriate reading levels. It is vital for first graders to spend time reading books at their reading level in order for them to work on specific reading skills because this helps students to develop as readers. At this stage of their life, many books aren't accessible to them so making sure our library is stocked full of just right books is essential.
