My students need books for our classroom library, because most of our books are tattered at the seams, missing pages, and are either not on my students’ level or just don’t interest them.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work as a Kindergarten ICT (Integrative Collaborative Team) and SETTS (Special Education Teacher Technology) teacher in Bushwick, Brooklyn. My students are a mixture of, both, Special Education and General Education students. Most of my students are of Latino descent and are English Language Learners. My children do not have it easy. Many of my students’ parents do not speak English, some come from foster homes, some live in shelters, and some do not know when or where their next meal is coming from. Yet these children come to school every single day with smiles on their faces, ready and willing to learn. My students have so much potential to excel in school and beyond, but they do not have the proper tools and materials in order to do so.
My Project
My students need books for our classroom library, because most of our books are tattered at the seams, missing pages, and are either not on my students’ level or just don’t interest them.
I’d like to have a leveled library with books that interest my students.
These new books will spark an interest for reading, which is what every teacher and parent hopes for. Reading will also encourage my students to want to learn about other things as well.
I was wondering if you could help give my class the opportunity to learn. If students are interested in reading they will excel in all subject areas, use their imagination to take them to faraway places, and enjoy school and learning.
Is it possible to give us some high interest books and leveled literature of any kind? With this type of literature, my students will be given the opportunity to increase their love for reading. These children are our future, but without the proper materials, where will they stand ten years from now? I believe through books, my students will not only be given the opportunities that they deserve in order to learn, but also to dream.
