Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are pretty incredible young people. There is often an assumption that teens don't read, but my students do. We read in class every day and having a small classroom library in my room has been the number one asset to their reading. Sometimes the hardest part is just finding what interests them. However, when I am able to offer what they are looking for, they will pick up a book, and....read it! I also encourage them to explore a variety of genres throughout the year. However, last year there was a noticeable shift in what they were asking to read: true crime and murder mystery. Alas, I had a very small collection to offer. So, it is time to ask for help in filling this gap so my students have what they want to read.

For the past several years I have been an avid supporter of my students self selecting the majority of their reading because when they learn to choose for themselves and read what interests them, they become readers.

Reading for pleasure, for joy, for community, or for introspection are all reasons to become life long readers, but students do not get that experience when they only read cannon assigned books in English class. My goal is to grow readers because there is so much that can come from reading a book. I'd like to start this year off with a significant section of books of the genre my students want in my classroom library.
