Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello. I teach nineteen second graders in an underprivileged school in the South Bronx. My students have very few resources to stimulate academic growth and success. One of these limited resources is computer technology.
Just recently we acquired a few computers and a printer to support student learning. The students in my class are really excited about their new acquisitions, but with some frustration. They have not been able to properly utilize these great classroom resources because we do not have furniture suitable to store the computer and printer. The computer monitor sits on a traditional desk. The keyboard and mouse are stored inside the desk. Whenever the students use the computer, they place the keyboard on their laps or on another desk and they roll the mouse on a hard surface such as a book or another desk.
Unfortunately, many of my students do not have computers in their homes. They need a computer workstation in the classroom that can store the computer and the printer. A workstation would be very useful in helping my students to use computer technology in the classroom and maximize academic productivity.
Computers are important tools for twenty-first century education. Computer technology is just one more way for my students to learn, to explore their world and to express themselves. They supplement the materials that are already in the classroom. A workstation will help ease the frustration of my students and help them to enjoy learning with computer technology.
