This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our Title I high needs inner city school is a diamond in the rough! We are housed in a beautiful 100 year old building that may pose some challenges that we are all willing to conquer! We are in the heart of Cypress Hills Brooklyn in East New York. This provides us with so many opportunities to learn from a diverse community where there are chances for field trips and community learning activities.
Although we face struggles and challenges our students are eager to learn and push themselves to succeed.
We are predominently Hispanic but have students from all over, especially from Guyana. I have had the unique pleasure of teaching at IS 171 for 17 years and every year is a new adventure with new students and new experiences.
My Project
There are so many ways these materials will benefit our students! Clipboards are a great asset for students to have when they move around the classroom for Gallery Walks and Centers! No longer are classrooms filled with rows and chalkboards with notes to copy. Today, they are museums and interactive centers with laptops and primary sources. Students move and learn in flexible groups. Classrooms are a place for students to share thoughts and ideas.
The Social Studies classroom is the perfect place to grow as an independent thinker and active group member.
With Post-It Notes students leave their thoughts and ideas for others to critique and analyze. They are a great way for students to add to primary source documents or leave positive and critical feedback to others.
Positive motivation and responsible facilitating is key to having a classroom become a museum or critical thinking center. Therefore, positive reinforcement is always key. Charts that show progress and rewards are great for keeping students on task and focused.
