Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a high poverty area. A number live in temporary housing. Yet they and their parents are determined to make education a priority. My students want to do well and are so proud when they raise their reading level, pass a math facts test or add to a classroom conversation. The focus and wonder that my student exhibit is amazing. Even on class trips they apply what we have learned - telling me this is an "urban" or "suburban" area as we drive along. Or, they identify some other aspect of the landscape.
All students have unique talents and gifts, yet mine often do not have a chance to explore these because of their socio-economic status.
Whether they be budding mathematicians, writers, artists, doctors, teachers or musicians - my students need support to help them discover themselves.
I am grateful for Donor's Choice to give me the opportunity to help my students grow.
My Project
The transition from second to third grade can be a rough one for some readers. I have taught both grades. Upon entering third grade, students must go in the realm of advanced chapter books. Here there is minimal illustration, printed becomes smaller, words becomes bigger and books become longer - much longer.
My third grade students need to grow into reading longer and more complex texts.
They need to accumulate text across chapters, remembering what was read in earlier chapters when it is needed in later chapters. My students must apply reading strategies - inference, conclusion, prediction, importance - to complex texts. So I have selected a variety of fiction and nonfiction chapter books to provide my students what they need to grow as readers. I have chosen books and books series, like The Magic Tree House, that I know help grow readers. For lower functioning readers, I have chosen easier chapter books or episodic books to help them continue growing. I have also requested 6 plastic book bins to hold the books.
