My Students

I teach in a Title I school where over 85% of the students in my class will qualify for free and reduced-price lunch because of their low economic status. Many of my students face challenges every day at school and at home. They have very limited choices in their lives, and it is my mission to provide them with the best learning environment possible.

These energetic sixth graders often have limited choices for what they do from day to day, but by having options for books, seating, and materials in my classroom, it will give them more opportunities to learn how they best work.

With a high poverty level, many of my students face multiple challenges both in and out of the classroom, but they are very brave. We learn so much from them! It is my goal every day to make our classroom welcoming, inviting, and an active dynamic place to learn.

My Project

Part of these materials will help make our current curriculum in sixth grade more interactive and relevant. Freak the Mighty will be used as a class book which we will be reading concurrently with our current English curriculum. By having a novel that is speaking to the themes of the unit, we will be able to see more growth than normal because students will hopefully be wanting to learn more about the characters of the book.

The 57 Bus will be a great read-aloud that will be showing students a real-life event and the difference of perspectives while challenging them to see through different lenses that they might not see in their everyday lives.

My hope is that by using this book as a read-aloud that we will be able to have conversations around perspectives and race.

Lastly, Survivors of the Holocaust: True Stories of Six Extraordinary Children will be used to connect students to a historical time period where horrible events happened and see how six children rose from the pain.
