Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each classroom in our school has separate trash containers for paper, plastic, organic waste etc...but we really need a LARGE, CENTRAL RECYCLING CENTER, where kids can leave the various kinds of trash from their classrooms, so that it is then ready to be picked up and recycled by our city. My students need a 92-gallon recycling center for our K-8 Center, which serves 900 children.

That's the idea of three fifth-graders - Epiphany, Joseph and Karina - who are working with me on Donors Choose projects to improve our school.

This is what the kids have to say on the significance of recycling: "Kids in this school love to recycle. Recycling creates less garbage piles. Kids don't want their world to be a landfill. The important thing is that we know when we recycle that we are turning used stuff into books and water bottles. Recycling is important!"

My Project

We'd like to tell you more about the Recycling Station itself. First, it is big and holds 92 gallons of recyclable material. It has a round opening leading to a container for glass, cans and plastic, a triangular opening leading to a container for organic waste, a slot, under which is a container for white paper, and a square opening to a container for other trash. As well as the different-shaped holes, there are pictures on brightly-colored backgrounds, plus English and Spanish labels indicate just which kind of trash goes where. The kids want to put the Recycling Center in the middle of our campus to allow ease of access to recycling monitors from all classes, who'll go there to empty their classroom recycling bins. It will also be near the hardcourt, which is the kids' favorite play area, and where they congregate before and after school. Why do we want to place it there? In my students own words, "Kids litter a lot! We hate that kids are careless and throw things on the floor. We need a big recycling bin near the hardcourt so we can stay green."

I think that my fifth graders came up with a great project.

It will help with the logistics of our school's recycling program, but more importantly I believe, it will help our kids BUY INTO the program. Student monitors will take trash down to the Recycling Center, which will be in the middle of campus, close to the ever-popular hardcourt, and will be passed by hundreds of kids daily. Hopefully, other students will agree with my fifth graders: "We as kids LOVE recycling because it is fun, exiting and IMPORTANT!"
