My Students
I teach at a Title 1 school in West Harlem. My students are bright, motivated, and passionate. Most of my students come from low-income families. Many must endure the stress of homelessness, poverty, divorce, and neighborhood violence.
My students come to school every day excited for choice time!
This is a special time where they decide what they want to learn about. Children work throughout our classroom on sewing, building, painting, and playing. Some of my students have learning disabilities, and this is an especially important time in the day where they can learn through hands-on exploration and collaboration with their peers.
My Project
We need a puppet theater with diverse puppets to inspire children's play during choice time. Puppet play supports childhood development in so many amazing ways! Puppets lend to story retelling and creation. Children make up the roles, the situations, and the solutions! Reenacting familiar stories or situations promotes early literacy skills as children practice sequencing. Children naturally learn to incorporate powerful writing skills like adding dialogue and action to make their stories come alive!
Puppets are a valuable tool for strengthening oral language skills and building confidence in public speaking.
Being partially hidden behind a puppet stage helps children overcome the inhibitions of speaking in public, and helps performers enhance their voice projection. Puppet play also fosters children's social-emotional development. Children often communicate more easily with puppets, giving them confidence to express their ideas and feelings and work through conflicts.
