I work at a magnet school which means we have a very diverse group of students. They come from all over the city of Chicago. Diversity is celebrated and nurtured at our school. Our students are inquisitive, talented and have amazing potential to accomplish whatever they want to do. They are creative and are able to think outside of the box. They are eager and ready to learn and I feel extremely fortunate in sharing their school experience journey with them. I have learned as much from my students as they have from me. They remind me on a daily basis what is truly important, I have witnessed bravery, kindness, and compassion through my students. They are truth seekers!
My Project
I have created a safe, comfortable, and engaging environment for my students. School is a haven for some of my students. I have rugs on the floor, pillows to lay with bright colors, and soft cushions to sit on. My classroom is welcoming. It is a place where learning begins and when students enter the room, they know that they are allowed to be themselves. Now, imagine students sitting around on the carpet during story time. They are happy, content and fully engaged. They are comfortable laying down on the carpet or leaning back on the colorful floor chair, and then they are asked to go back to their seats. They grudgingly return to their seats, knowing what is waiting for them. They sit down, and their chairs creak, wobble, and the moment is gone. The quiet moment of feeling peaceful has vanished with the sound of their creaking chairs.
We look at chairs as just furniture, but sitting on that chair is where it all begins.
Creativity, imagination, and learning originate from that chair. Please help fund chairs that are not broken, cracked, or wobble. Basic need but so essential for success in learning to take place.
