This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our beautiful, big, red brick school is in the middle of an urban neighborhood in the third-largest city in New Jersey. Most of our students are Hispanic or African American and 65% of our students speak Spanish in their homes. We are a low-income school with all of the students receiving free breakfast and lunch. We were out for 18 months because of Covid and just as we were about to start in September, Hurricane Ida hit. Our school was flooded, there was some damage and we remained remote until 10/18!

We have finally returned to our classrooms and we are thrilled to be back.

The kids are ready to go, even when masked, social distancing, and sitting behind partitions. They have missed each other, their teachers, the activities, but most of all learning.

My Project

Years ago, during a renovation, our school covered all of the old chalkboards with peel and stick dry erase board. It was truly a thing of beauty to walk into a classroom and watch the vast expanse of walls be covered in colorful math problems, only to be erased and done again. I'm sure you can picture it! After years of use and dedicated service these boards are a mess. Sections of it have been peeled away, the top layer has peeled so now marks can't be erased, there is residue tape from when we tried to cover it with posters. Frankly, it is an unsightly distraction.

We need these new walls to brighten up the classroom and to let our mathematical minds grow and learn creatively.

There is nothing a student likes better than to go to the board and show their peers their work. For a student to stand in front of the class and explain their thinking is priceless.
