Walking to a Healthier Student

My students need pedometers and cones to mark our walking trail.

My Students

Our school is a Title One school. Title One means that 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school is located in a low income area. Our students work very hard every day. Our school has a 97% attendance rate, which means they rarely miss school. My class of second graders are very inquisitive and vocal.

Our school is one of the most diverse schools in Memphis,TN.

Our students speak multiple languages including English, Spanish, Arabic, Hindu, Amharic and Swahili. My students have a strong sense of community.

My Project

My second grade P.E. class has started a new school garden. We have had classes on the benefits of eating healthy and eating lots of fruit and vegetables. One student noted that we exercise in P.E. once a week but what about the other days. When I asked what else can we do every day to stay healthy, the students had a lot of ideas. The idea that was most common was walking.

The students said walking was one of the easiest ways to stay fit and healthy.

We need the pedometers to help us keep track and graph the number of steps the students take. We will use the cones to mark off a trail for the students to walk during recess or before and after school.
