I am an Adaptive Physical Education Teacher for grades 1-12 Special Education in Elizabeth City Pasquotank Public Schools. I would like to purchase an Active Steps Youth Program curriculum kit to be used in our Special Education program. North Carolina youth are 2-3 times more likely to be obese than other youth across the nation. Further, our kids exhibit risk factors for heart disease as early as the third grade. These and other startling facts are leading to a generation of overweight and unhealthy kids, who will grow into obese and unhealthy adults. The human and financial costs associated with this epidemic are huge…but we aim to turn the tide towards an active and healthy generation. The Active Steps Youth Program is a comprehensive walking program that uses electronic pedometers to help teach children and adolescents how to set physical activity goals and achieve them through teamwork. The program will be administered by the Adaptive P.E. teacher and utilizes a kit, which includes 30 pedometers, carrying case, backpack, student and teacher workbooks, posters, log cards, resource CD-Rom, pedometer belts, incentive prizes, stickers, music, and curriculum for each class. This program removes the element of individual competition and the entire class can work toward a common goal. With easy-to-follow curriculum and easy-to-use technology, the program enables all age groups to learn about and engage in physical activity and focuses on creating lifelong habits of physical fitness, both in and out of school. Providing our schools with the Active Steps Youth Program will give us a valuable resource that can be used in multiple classes and schools, year after year, serving thousands of children. Once the program is purchased, it requires no further investment on the part of the school. Further, the lesson plans included in this program provide many opportunities to integrate physical education with other subject areas. Be Active North Carolina, the nonprofit organization that created the program, will provide technical assistance on use of the kit. This program is currently being used by over 100 North Carolina schools and community organizations and is getting rave reviews. We are excited about the possibility of providing our students with this valuable resource for adaptive physical education. Thank you for your consideration and know that your funds will be spent wisely on a program that will make a huge difference for our SPECIAL students.
