My Students

If we cannot see each other, and we are always supposed to be very, very quiet, how are we supposed to know what is going on?

I am proud to work in an inner city school in the Bronx, NY.

I have been at this school for over 30 years. During much of that time I have instituted a Musical Theater program that has involved hundreds of students. Although these students live in NYC, most would never have the chance to experience a Broadway musical. Once given the opportunity to perform in one, my students soar! They love the excitement of the performance and they both crave and tolerate the tedium of the rehearsals. Once they realize that all the work that they have to do in order to have a successful performance will actually result in an amazing experience they usually get on board for the ride.

My Project

Every year my students approach me on the first day of school excited to find out what show we will be putting on this year. I was happy to report that this year I planned on having them put on The Wizard Of Oz. This was surprising news to my students. Last spring many of the same students had put on a production of Annie Jr. While this show was a huge hit with the audience, those who had been involved with the show knew only too well the technical problems we had. When we put on a show, the students that are waiting to go on stage stay in a classroom behind and across from the auditorium. The only way for students who are not on stage to know when it is their time to enter the stage is for a "runner" to run out of the auditorium and around the back of the stage to the classroom holding cell. I also have to wave my arms to communicate with the spot light operator and curtain puller. This is very distracting for the audience, and basically no way to put on a show.

My musical theater program at my school has impacted many students over the years.

Many have gone on to study different aspects of theater - acting, stagecraft, lighting design, sound technician, and theater management. I have brought some of these former students back to speak to my kids. They are a real motivational force.
