Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I love how resilient, joyful, and determined my students are, despite the many challenges they face outside of school. Many of them come from immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking families and are navigating poverty, trauma, and housing insecurity. Still, they show up every day with hope in their eyes, ready to learn, play, and connect.
As the school counselor at a Title I elementary school, I often meet students who lack basic necessities like proper footwear.
Some come to school with shoes that are too small, falling apart, or shared among siblings. When children are uncomfortable or embarrassed by their shoes, it affects their confidence, their ability to participate in physical activities, and their overall sense of belonging.
This project will provide brand-new, high-quality sneakers to students who need them most. Shoes may seem like a small thing, but for a child, they can make all the difference. These sneakers will allow students to walk with confidence, run during recess, join in gym class without discomfort, and show up in every space with dignity. Your generosity will meet a basic need—but more importantly, it will remind these children that they matter.
